Students seeking a rigorous professional massage therapy curriculum will find quality and excellence in Northwestern's School of Massage Therapy. The massage therapy program is dedicated to advancing the public's perception and acceptance of massage therapy as an important health care option. Massage therapists fill an increasingly important role in the health care field. A growing number of medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic are referring patients to massage therapists all around the United States.

The School of Massage Therapy is a program at Northwestern Health Sciences University which has been an international leader for more than six decades in natural health care, scientific research, and patient care. We offer prospective students a wide array of choices in natural health care education in the United States, with programs in chiropractic, acupuncture, Oriental medicine, massage therapy, and integrative health and wellness. The small enrollment of less than 1,000 students allows the University to provide our students with the individual attention and access to educational resources that they require to succeed.

LOCATION
Northwestern Health Sciences University is located in Bloomington, Minnesota, the largest suburb of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The beautifully-landscaped 25-acre campus wraps around a small lake and includes 230,000 square feet of state-of-the art-laboratories, classrooms and clinics.

FACILITIES
There are two 1,100-square-foot massage labs equipped with a minimum of one massage table for every two students. The School also makes use of lecture halls located throughout the University for classes held in a didactic format. The School of Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic, located at the Burnsville Natural Care Center, operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Clinical internship opportunities available to massage therapy students include Abbott-Northwestern Hospital and the Courage Center (a nationally-known rehabilitation center.)

Additional facilities at Northwestern include a 600-seat auditorium, a 10,000-square-foot library, gym, pool, fitness center, bookstore and student lounge.

Northwestern has pioneered an extraordinary and unique clinical system, with a University public clinic system, more than 150 community-based private-practice clinics, and final term preceptorship opportunities around the world. The University's clinic system records more than 65,000 patient visits a year, making Northwestern the largest provider of natural health care services in Minnesota.

PROGRAM
Students receive a professional certificate in massage therapy upon successful completion of the program. Students may enroll in one of two convenient program options: the day program or the evening program.

The day program requires three academic trimesters to complete. The day program classes are offered three days per week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The clinical experience begins in the second trimester and is offered in the morning or afternoon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. The school admits new massage therapy students for the day program in January and September of each calendar year.

The evening program requires four academic trimesters to complete. The evening program classes are offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The clinical experience begins in the third trimester and requires a morning or afternoon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. For the evening program, new students will be admitted at the beginning of one trimester each year in April/May.

CURRICULUM
This 36-semester credit, 780-hour program emphasizes a solid foundation in the basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, kinesiology and nutrition) and provides comprehensive training in massage therapy assessment and treatment techniques through a 367-hour sequence of courses. The School offers more than 340 hours of hands-on lab experience and includes a structured clinical experience with more than 100 hours of hands-on experience within the School of Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic and other community sites. The School of Massage Therapy has assembled outstanding teacher-practitioners, including some of the most experienced therapists in Minnesota.
